5 mistakes many people make when designing a billboard - and how to avoid them
A billboard is one of the most powerful visual tools a business has - yet you often see billboards that don't deliver the expected effect, a mistake that is easy to make. In most cases, this is not due to the quality of the materials or the manufacture, but to mistakes made at the design stage.
In this post, we've put together 5 typical mistakes to avoid when making a billboard - and show you how to get it right.
1. Too much text
Many businesses want to put all their information on one sign: company name, services, opening hours, contact details, motto... The result is a cluttered, hard-to-understand visual noise.
Tip: The sign should convey a short, punchy message - in 3-5 words. Make it immediately clear what the company does, what the offer is about.
2. Poorly legible font
Ornate, oversized fonts can be beautiful, but on a blackboard they can be very hard to read. This is especially true if the message needs to be understood quickly, even from a car.
Tip: Use simple, contrasting fonts with appropriate font sizes. The letters of the main message should be at least 10-15 cm high.
3. Inappropriate choice of colour
If the background and text colour are too close together, the text will blend into the background. A wrong colour combination can make the best message go unnoticed.
Tip: Always have a strong contrast between the background and the text. Classic pairings that work well: black and yellow, white and red, dark blue and white.
4. General messages
Phrases such as "Quality and reliability" or "We put you first", although they sound good, do not provide concrete information and do not differentiate your company from your competitors.
Tip: Make your message unique and targeted. For example:
- "Car wrapping within 24 hours"
- "LED billboard production with 1 year warranty"
- "Shop decoration before opening, on time"
5. Incorrect placement or size
It's no use having a professional design if the sign is not visible - for example, if it's too high up, poorly lit or covered by a tree or post.
Tip: When designing the sign, the environment must also be taken into account. A well placed, visible and appropriately sized sign will really attract attention. Before any decorating work is undertaken, it's a good idea to carry out a site survey - this is the way to achieve a truly effective result.
Summary
A billboard is not an ornament, it is an investment. It works well when:
-
your message is immediately clear
-
readable and attention-grabbing
-
visually clean
-
is placed in the right place and of the right size
